Unfortunately, the debate is focusing on the wrong solution, namely what to do about the so-called pit bull problem. While carefully tailored restrictions that take into account the problems with some breeds might legitimately be made part of an overall plan to curtail dog bites, a simple ban on one breed will probably not benefit our communities.

The Tennessee State Legislature has passed a historic, long-overdue bill that will end the ancient and inhumane one-bite rule in that state. Sponsored by Sen. Doug Jackson and Rep. David Shepard, and originally drafted by Attorney Kenneth Phillips, SB 143 / HB 108 is on its way to Governor Phil Bredesen for enactment into law.
